This training will be offered in English. A copy of Dr. Sattler’s new book, ASSESSMENT OF CHILDREN: COGNITIVE FOUNDATIONS AND APPLICATIONS, Seventh Edition, will also be provided to each participant.

Following Dr Sattler’s presentation, Drs Reisinger and Garcin will present a more in-depth review of assessment “Knowns and Unknowns” for the assessment and diagnosis of Intellectual disability, Global developmental delay, Autism, and ADHD.   Diagnostic formulation and pulling all the assessment data together for diagnostic differentiation will also be offered.

Needs

Psychologists who assess mental disorders must possess evidence-based knowledge of the assessment of children.  As the proposed amendments of the Loi des professions evolves, psychologists will now use the word “diagnosis”, a shared act with the College des Médecins, and will need to gather further knowledge in this area.

Target Audience

  • Psychologists (clinical, school and neuropsychologists), psychometrists and psychological trainees who are involved in the cognitive assessment of children.

Certificate of Participation

A certificate of attendance will be issued to participants. The certificate will state the number of hours actually attended by the participant.

Objectives

Conceptual or theoretical-clinical content-
– This course focuses on the neurocognitive assessment of children. Child psychological development, clinical and educational psychology are covered. Theories of intelligence are also addressed by Dr. Sattler. We will include the following topics:

  • Assessment processes and methods
  • Intervention processes and methods
  • Common factors (suggestion, psychotherapist’s attitudes, client’s setting and expectations, relational quality and communication skills)
  • Critical tools (scientific methods, such as quantitative research, statistics and qualitative research including epistemological models, among others, hermeneutics and phenomenology)
  • Human development and its issues, including cultural issues, classification of mental disorders and psychopathology

Dr Jerome M. Sattler

Jerome M. Sattler is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus and an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University. In 1998 he received the Senior Scientist Award from the Division of School Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In 2003, he received an honorary Doctor of Sciences degree from Central Missouri State University. In 2005, he received the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology from the American Psychological Foundation. In 2006, he received the Distinguished Contribution to Psychology Award from the San Diego Psychological Association and a Distinguished Visiting Professor Award from the Colorado School of Professional Psychology. In 2014, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Azusa Pacific University. In 2015, he received the 1949 Award from the Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Kansas (1949 is the year the program at KU received approval from the American Psychological Association) given to distinguished alumni for outstanding contributions to clinical psychology. In 2018, he received the Commemorative Medallion awarded by the College of Psychology, Nova Southeastern University. In 2024, he received the ABPP Distinguished Service to the Profession Award, 2023.

His books include Assessment of Children: Cognitive Foundations and Applications (Seventh Edition), Foundations of Behavioral, Social, and Clinical Assessment of Children (Seventh Edition), and Assessment with the WAIS–IV (with Joseph J. Ryan). The first five editions of Assessment of Children have been translated into Spanish. In 2007, a Spanish translation and a Chinese translation (brief edition) of Assessment of Children, Behavioral, Social, and Clinical Foundation (Fifth Edition) were published.

 

Dr Lisa Reisinger, PhD, psychologist

Dr. Reisinger is a developmental psychologist who has over 25 years experience working with populations with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Over the years she has enjoyed working in the public and private sectors. In the public sector, she worked as a clinical leader in the Montreal Children’s Hospital’s ASD Complex Case and research teams, and she worked in the West Montreal Readaptation’s trans-disciplinary team for severe and challenging behaviours. She has enjoyed many years providing psychotherapy to children, teens, and adults.

Dr. Reisinger was a Canadian site-supervisor in the collection of the Simons Simplex Collection (SSC), which is to date, the largest permanent repository of genetic samples from families of individuals with ASD who do not have a family history of autism.

Dr. Reisinger has her certification as an independent ADOS-2 and ADI-R trainer. She offers private training and supervision to professionals involved in the diagnosis of autism and its related populations.

She has over 20 years of experience as a McGill University lecturer, and she has written peer reviewed scientific journal articles and book chapters about autism and its related populations.

 

Dr Nathalie Garcin, PhD, clinical psychology and founder of Clinique Spectrum

For the last 7 years, Dr. Garcin has been directing Clinique Spectrum, an interdisciplinary clinic specializing in neurodiversity.

Following the completion of her PhD in clinical psychology in 1999, she was a professor in the department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at Queen’s University from 2000 to 2004.

She went on to act as Director of Professional Services for two developmental services agencies in Montreal, serving over 1,300 individuals with ASD and intellectual disability.

In 2012, Nathalie was appointed to the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Advisory committee on the surveillance of autism spectrum disorder (NASS) and in 2016, she was appointed as Board Member of the Canadian Alliance for Autism Spectrum Disorders (CASDA).
